INSTALLATION
As the computer industry does more and more with DOS shells and
with Windows, more and more of the computer's specialized memory
is occupied by such features. Unfortunately, this use of memory
often competes with the needs of INRAC language, in which "BUDDY"
is written. To avoid such difficulties, we recommend that you
boot your computer anew each time you use "BUDDY"--and that you
boot from a system disk.
1. THE BEST WAY (3 1/2" disk)
Copy all of the "BUDDY" files to a formatted 3 1/2 inch
SYSTEM disk. Boot from that disk each time you run "BUDDY."
You can make a system disk in either of two ways: (1) format
a new disk using the command "format/s a:" (or "b:" if you are
formatting a new disk in your B drive); or (2) place your 3 1/2
inch backup copy of "BUDDY" in your A or B drive and from your
hard disk "C >" prompt (or from your DOS disk prompt) type "SYS
A:" or "SYS B:" and press enter. Either way, the system files are
transferred to the "BUDDY" disk, and you can (and SHOULD) boot
using that disk.
2. ANOTHER GOOD WAY (5 1/4" disk)
Copy all of the "BUDDY" files to a regularly formatted
backup disk and label it "BUDDY WORK DISK." Make a 5 1/4 inch
SYSTEM disk (by using the command "format/s") and label it "BUDDY
START DISK."
Each time you run "BUDDY" begin by booting your computer
anew using the start disk. When the "A>" prompt appears, remove
the start disk and replace it with the work disk. Run the "BUDDY"
program by typing and entering the word GO.
3. A BAD WAY (hard drive)
We DO NOT RECOMMEND that you install "BUDDY" on your hard
drive. This can cause the start-up problems described above, and
it makes it much harder to use "BUDDY" as your word precessor's
"data disk"--which is necessary to complete the tutorial.
However, experienced computer users are often able to cir-
cumvent these difficulties. It will do no actual harm to the
program or to the computer if you decide that you want "BUDDY" on
your hard drive--it's just tricky.
QUICK START
To begin using "BUDDY," simply type and enter the word GO at
the DOS prompt. Follow the directions on the screen. At "RETURN"
prompts you may talk to the computer in ordinary English sen-
tences.

INTRODUCTION
BUDDY is an Artificial Intelligence tutorial in techniques of
writing using a word processor. Its emphasis is on clarity and
organization. The tutorial consists of eight lessons which stu-
dents can complete at their own pace. The program automatically
returns the user to the point where he or she left off.
One of BUDDY's special features is its "COMMON ERROR DETECTOR,"
which checks individual sentences for the kinds of diction errors
which bedevil and perplex even some very experienced writers.
In addition, BUDDY provides entertainment through its "JUST TALK"
option, which has ability to conduct conversations. Students
chat with BUDDY, or ask questions, throughout the eight lessons
of the tutorial, but the feature "JUST TALK" provides a break
from serious work--to engage in banter with "Buddy," the sur-
prisingly intelligent speaker whom the user confronts on the
computer screen. As a chatting companion, Buddy is sometimes
nutty, sometimes outrageous, and sometimes even helpful.
Even when users are finished with the eight lessons of the tuto-
rial they can continue to enjoy chatting with their good old
buddy through the "JUST TALK" feature, or to make use of the
"COMMON ERROR DETECTOR" to check sentences they feel unsure
about.
BUDDY was designed for college level adult learners using U.S.
conventions of punctuation and diction, but it is beneficial for
anyone who uses a word processor and would like to be a better
writer. (Minimum suggested educational level: high school jun-
iors.) BUDDY employs English language spelling and punctuation
conventions of the United States of America.
You may find BUDDY unlike any software you have ever used.
It is written in the Artificial Intelligence computer programming
language INRAC, which enables BUDDY to understand what you
write--almost as if you were using your keyboard to write notes
or instructions to another human being.
You may address the computer with questions, comments, notes,
observations, or insults whenever the "RETURN" prompt appears.
The computer will attempt to give you an appropriate
response--but you should be aware that BUDDY is an ENTERTAIN-
MENT disk as well as a tutorial, and much of the fun comes from
the nuttiness and irreverence of the computer's responses to
what you say.
If you decide to complete or continue using the BUDDY tutori-
al, please use the registration form at the end of this docu-
mentation to remit the $19.50 purchase price. Once you have
registered you receive a subscription to Chatfield Software's
"CHATFIELD SOFTWARE NEWSLETTER," including a featured "TIP-SHEET
FOR WRITERS," and you are entitled to unlimited free techni-
cal support by calling (216) 569-3201. In ADDITION, you benefit
from a 10% discount on other Chatfield Software products.
Many thanks!

GETTING STARTED WITH BUDDY
Getting started with BUDDY is a cinch. You simply turn on
or reboot your IBM-compatible computer and type "GO" (without
the quotation marks) at the DOS prompt ( > ).
Once you have used BUDDY you really won't have much use for
this printed guide, because BUDDY can tell you everything
you need to know. When in doubt, ask for the "menu." HOW do you
ask for the menu? The same way you'd ask for it in a restaurant:
in plain English.
In an emergency, you can exit BUDDY by typing "x" at any
prompt. However, we strongly urge you to exit through the
menu--to avoid cluttering your disk with fragments or lost clus-
ters.
USING THE PROGRAM
You may proceed through the program at your own pace. Just be
sure that you enter your name in EXACTLY the same way each time
you return, including any punctuation. BUDDY uses its
ability to recognize names (or subtle variations in them) to find
the place where the disk's owner left off. (So be advised: if you
lend your disk to someone else, you will lose your place in the
program!)
An important feature of the program is that you alternate between
using your program disk as (1) your BUDDY work disk and (2) the
data disk for your word processor. The same disk serves these
TWO purposes!
When the program asks you to exit and pick up a file with your
word processor, you exit BUDDY through the menu. Then you boot
your word processor AND USE THE BUDDY DISK as your word processor
DATA DISK! (Several times you will be asked to retrieve a file
named "TASK.OUT" with your word processor. You retrieve it from
the BUDDY disk as an ASCII text file.)
When you have finished your word processor task and are ready to
return to BUDDY, you: (1) exit your word processor; (2) REBOOT
your computer for BUDDY; (3) run your BUDDY program (the BUDDY
program will return you to the place where you left off).
PROBLEMS?
We only know of one problem you might have in using BUDDY.
If you fail to reboot the computer after using other programs,
the BUDDY program may abort when you attempt to "talk" to
the computer or ask questions; BUDDY will not operate
properly with "TSR" (terminate and stay resident) programs still
resident; rebooting is a way of avoiding that problem. Always
reboot before running BUDDY. Try always to exit BUDDY through
the menu--to avoid leaving open files.
